My fmp idea

I've been thinking long and hard about subjects which I could base my fmp around, i've always wanted to be the person which can open peoples eyes to knowledge which has long been forgotten and then I realised...im not very persuasive with my arguements so the idea of doing mine on mythology was discarded relatively quickly.

I then had many other ideas inbetween this time but I then found myself settling on a subject which relates to the industry I want to join, something thats going to be ever changing nd developing with a dense background and a bright future, for my fmp I want to do computer games graphics

The past and where they begun.
The present and where they are now and finally.
The Future and where the technology is leading us.

From the birth of pong and pac-man to the discovery of pixel mario, the blazing firefights of Halo and COD to the furthest reaches of 3D gaming and virtual reality.

I want to explore the lengths and breaths of an industry which is powered by who? The graphic card manufactuers OR the people that build and design the games with the graphics in them?

Over the course of my project I wish to discover the god fathers of gaming and the experience which comes from realistic graphics and how they have improved and where I believe for them to be in the future

Visit to Leeds

28th October I drove down to Leeds with my dad because we heard of a computer games fare which will be moving to London in the next couple of days, it was called EuroGamer and it was held and sponsored by businesses and partnerships from people both in the industry and retailer outlets from around the country, they also had a careers fare which had a lot of people from the industry there, both companies and local universities to give help and answer question of how to get into the industry.

This was their second year holding the event where they show cased this year’s latest innovative games from all major computer games producers with a special guest from NVIDIA on their 3d gaming spectacles.

They had the likes of PS3 Xbox 360, Wii, and the latest in PC gaming and much more as each company let the public get their hands on and test the latest games in development both recently released such as “Borderlands” to the new Wii game “Fairy tale adventures”. This allowed people to decide weather they wanted to purchase these new releases or weather they would stick with a different new release or settle with nothing new at all.

It felt like a lot of people had gone here for a cheap day out to play a lot of good games with the masses of people all queuing up for their chance to have a bash at them while they sat there staring at the computer screens with a glazed look over their faces transfixed to what they were playing.

The careers fare was the main reason I went to the fare to help give me an insight into the career path I wanted to pursue and also what other universities there were out there to offer me the education I wanted and future career with as many future possibilities as I can get.

At the careers fare they had:
Game republic
Leeds Metropolitan university
Team 17
Ubisoft
University of Bradford
University of Huddersfield

I found that they were incredibly helpful and kind and they all felt convincing when they spoke as opposed to when we visited Swansea university and it felt like the person speaking to us wasn’t at all bothered weather we joined onto the course or not, this has helped regain my faith in the industry as some people are bothered about new people getting a foot hold.

Visit to swansea

As everybody knows on the 21st October majority of the class travelled to Swansea university for the open day there.
The tutors gave a quick introduction to who everyone was and the subjects they taught and went through who we would be going where with to discuss our futures, by the end of our tour with Mark, Karl and co. I felt the course was lacking something, the way it was structured was fine and there would be a lot of work to do, but something about the tutors attitude just didn't click and I found myself realising he wasn't that bothered about people joining on the course because every time Mark asked a question he had the look on his face as if to say "Oh, not him again", this gave me a bad impression and made me think about what if he will be like this once I start the course which he wouldn't be of much help so I find myself searching else where.

Location for the university is fine, I couldn't find anything to fault with that not even the hill the campus was situated on top of, but the lecturers let the side down unfortunately for them.

More to come on university visits in the future :)
